The Rowan (SARC)
Northern Ireland

Keppie was commissioned, in collaboration with GHA, to design a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) to provide a holistic and co-ordinated response for victims of sexual abuse. The “one-stop” Centre provides health and support services to victims in the aftermath of sexual assault, rape or abuse, and facilities for forensic examination.

The brief was continually tested and interrogated as this was one of the first purpose-built dedicated SARC buildings in the UK. Mature trees embrace the site and, together with the ambient background noise from the hospital, will create a natural, supportive environment for the service users. The ambition of this project is to create a safe and secure environment which ‘honours the experience for the victim’.

“The architectural design team has listened to the voices of victims and understood the multi-faceted requirements in delivering a range of support services to individuals and families whose lives have been affected by sexual violence.”
