Ayrshire College
Kilmarnock

From the outset the project brief called for a new functional, flexible and efficient learning environment which was focused on securing the coherent provision of education in Ayrshire. Additionally, the client’s vision anticipated an inclusive, welcoming building that promoted a range of collaborative and interactive learning experiences.

The design responds to these aspirations by placing two legs of teaching accommodation around a central atrium space. This simple arrangements acknowledges the clients concepts of a ‘hug’ and a ‘mall’, in creating a mature, open easily understood series of interconnected spaces. In adopting this approach, the new Ayrshire College supports a range of individual and group working spaces, blending traditional and emerging platforms in the process.

The presentations were of an amazing standard and truly inspired myself and the other judges. There was definitely a futuristic vibe to the ideas and I am looking forward to working with the winning team, Cumnock Academy, to take the design forward.”
