West Dunbartonshire Council

The development of new offices for West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) involves the relocation of 500 staff from the current WDC Council offices, located on the periphery of the town to a new brownfield site in the heart of the town centre.

Keppie Design carried out a series of staff engagement workshops initially to focus on the agility of the workplace and culture. This ensured occupational efficiencies throughout the design whilst satisfying the client’s brief. The design will provide an inspirational workplace for staff with the creation of a focal point for the local community.

The project integrates the retained façade of the Grade A listed old Dumbarton Academy building by William Leiper. A one stop shop, flexible civic space, meeting and training rooms form the ‘public’ front of house with three floors of flexible, naturally lit and ventilate office floor plates beyond. The accommodation is wrapped around a central, social atrium space which promotes a sustainable ventilation solution for the building. Externally the building creates a new public realm landscaped space together with a semi private staff amenity space and carparking. The offices are due for completion in Spring 2017.

“The new office for West Dunbartonshire Council is to be the best new public building in the country, they should satisfy and exceed all technical requirements and be a demonstration of excellence.” - Richard Cairns, Executive Director for Infrastructure and Regeneration, West Dunbartonshire Council
