Kirkstyle & Bellfield Primary School
Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire

With a roll of 550 pupils, Kirkstyle and Bellfield Primary School is a new build merger of two existing schools. The site is located on the Bellfield Community Centre Site on the south side of Kilmarnock.

The Design and Build contract was won on the basis of a tender bid submission with Morrison Construction. As part of the bid submission Keppie have provided added value and changes to the Council’s proposed concept design in order to strengthen and enhance the design, increase the functionality and flexibility of spaces, ease buildability and by doing so, make the building more economical with a reduced construction programme.

The project involves the demolition of the existing community centre at the entrance to the site. Using a simple palette of materials of brick and curtain walling with a timber clad Nursery, the two storey design is arranged as two wings of teaching accommodation around a variety of outdoor learning and play spaces. Natural light and ventilation is maximised by double height voids and feature rooflights.
