Sauchiehall Centre

Located on one of Glasgow’s busiest shopping streets, the existing Sauchiehall Centre should have been fully occupied and thriving retail destination. The corner Units onto West Campbell Street and Wellington Street however, suffered from persistent vacancy. Together with the client, Quadrant Estates and KKR, complementary commercial, planning and design strategies were developed that would bring the units back to life by providing a new dining offer presented to Sauchiehall Street and Bath Street. The design strategy develops the two distinctive corners reflecting the character of Sauchiehall Street when approached from opposite directions, one formal and restrained, the other addressing the Glasgow School of Art is more flamboyant and distinctive.

The proposals increase the footprint of the corner units, simplifying their internal layouts and providing greater flexibility of use. A positive consultation process with Glasgow City Council resulted in planning consent being granted in March 2016. Unit 23 is expected to complete towards the end of 2016 with Unit 24 following in the first quarter of 2017. Concept designs were also developed to explore the potential of increasing the mix of uses and including a rooftop hotel as part of potential future development.
