International elite sports facility
The International Sports Village at Iskandar in Malaysia will be in the heart of Medini, destined to be the country’s second city, after Kuala Lumpur. The Sports Village will play an important role in developing a sense of place, attracting and developing elite sports, and balancing this with the promotion of community engagement and participation.
Keppie were involved in two distinct phases of the project’s development. Firstly, we supported KKP, a UK-based Sports consultant who won the initial contract to develop a brief alongside Khazanah’s Sporting and financial business case. This was predicated on securing the World 20/20 Cricket Finals to Malaysia for the first time, and attracting European football clubs like Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris St. Germain to Malaysia for pre-season tours and to install their own elite coaching academies at the Sports Village. Secondly, Keppie won the tender to develop design proposals from the agreed brief. Our remit was to develop the concept design to RIBA Stage 3 prior to handing over to a local design practice who would than take the signed off design through the local regulatory phases and onto to tender and completion.
The complex contains several community and development pitches for football, a ‘Wembley’ replica match pitch and a 12-wicket, international standard cricket oval with temporary accommodation for 20,000 spectators.
Internal facilities include a 20-court games hall and competition venue, 12 squash courts, multiple studio spaces, a gym, sports science department, changing facilities and administrative offices.
